Making a gift in the form of an endowment provides funding for the Manheim Township Educational Foundation in perpetuity: the principal funds are preserved while a portion of the income is available each year for distribution through grants to Manheim Township School District. Endowments create an enduring legacy, while establishing a permanent stream of funding to support projects in a particular area of interest or passion.

MTEF administers several memorial funds established to honor the following Manheim Township School District students, staff, and alumni. If you are interested in establishing a memorial fund, please contact us for more information.

The Louise Weaver Engle Memorial Fund

On September 22, 2004 the Manheim Township community lost a dedicated teacher and alumna with the unexpected death of Louise Weaver Engle.

Before retiring in June of 2004, she had been a first grade teacher at Brecht Elementary School for 25 years. Louise, a 1959 graduate of Manheim Township High School, was involved in planning numerous class reunions. Her colleagues at Manheim Township remember Louise as a dedicated teacher, a supportive mentor and a strong advocate for student success in the early grades.

Grants are intended for Brecht Elementary School literacy programs as reading was one of Louise’s passions.

Her friends, colleagues and MT alumni are invited to help continue her legacy at Manheim Township School District by contributing to the fund:

The Jean Hoadley Peterson Memorial Fund

Jean Hoadley Peterson was a 1964 graduate of Manheim Township High School and a victim of the 9/11 attacks on America.

Jean and her husband, Donald, were passengers on fatal Flight 93 that crashed in western Pennsylvania. Several members of her graduating class organized a memorial fund to be established in her honor through MTEF. It is the intent of this group that a grant be given each year in Jean’s memory.

Because Jean was involved in the healthcare field as a nurse-educator and compassionate caregiver, the memorial fund organizing committee has outlined certain criteria upon which all grants will be reviewed.

To contribute to this fund, which benefits middle- and high-school students attending Manheim Township School District, please send checks to:

The Wertz Memorial Fund was established in May 2006 by parents Robert L. Wertz, Class of ’52, and Elizabeth Jane Wertz after their son James Wertz passed away at the age of 41. James graduated from MTHS in 1982. Their daughter, Jane, passed away in July 2014 and she was added to the fund at that time. Jane was a 1985 graduate of MTHS.

The Wertz awards are presented at the end of each school year to two freshmen students who have shown the most improvement throughout the school year in a variety of areas including academics, athletics, community services, and behavior.
